9 Secrets to Savor Your Travels: Lessons from a Meditator’s Diary

Dear lovely reader. Scrolling through Instagram, mesmerized by a stunning travel reel, only to land in a reality that’s a tad more…crowded and chaotic..We’ve all been there, right?

Our ancestors had the luxury of fewer options for travel and destinations. Today, the internet bombards us with picture-perfect destinations. The truth, however, often differs from the filtered photos.

Why Travel?

So, what’s the real magic of travel? Is it about escaping the daily grind or seeking out new experiences? For me, the answer lies somewhere in between. My inner explorer craves adventure, while the meditator in me seeks a deeper connection with the world. Travel should bring you what you desire – rejuvenation, exploration, networking or even escape. Here I share some of the tricks and hacks to make your experience worthwhile:

  1. Capture Memories, Not Just Moments:

Phone cameras are amazing, and there’s no shame in snapping away to capture your travel memories. But remember, you don’t have to live-stream your entire trip. Sometimes, the best way to truly experience a place is to be present and soak it all in. I made a fun video after my trip to Sikkim. It was pure post-trip joy, not a constant barrage of updates.

  1. Define your escape:

If travel is your escape hatch, identify what you’re leaving behind. Is it a recent heartbreak? Minimize contact. Traveling solo but want company? Consider group tours like PlanTheUnplanned.com or Thrillophilia.com for instant connections.

  1. Walk this way:

Wherever possible, walk instead of public transport. During my travels in the North Eastern part of India, I used to walk 20-25 Km daily (compared to my usual 4-5 km stroll). I enjoyed connecting with locals, truly soaking in the scenery, and gathering stories for the memory bank.

  1. Go Offbeat and Offline:

If you enjoy going to places less traveled, skip the tourist traps and seek out hidden gems. Talk to friends who’ve been to your destination or ask locals for recommendations. You might be surprised by the incredible places waiting to be discovered, far from the reach of Instagram influencers.

  1. Travel Light (Internally too):

Before packing, ask yourself: “Do I really need this?” I am sure you understand why it is important to pack the necessary items only. This holds true for your internal baggage also. If doubtful, watch the movies Queen or The Way for a dose of light-hearted travel inspiration (and a reminder to pack light internally!).

  1. Let Go of Expectations:

Don’t get bogged down by a rigid itinerary. Leave room for spontaneity and embrace the unexpected! Flight delays can be a chance to explore hidden alleys, or simply enjoy a moment of unplanned peace. See them as opportunities to discover hidden gems or simply enjoy the peace of unplanned moments.

  1. Embrace the JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out):

Instead of cramming your itinerary to the max and feeling overwhelmed, focus on the joy of simply being present and savoring the experiences you choose. On one trip where I needed to relieve stress, I spent 4 glorious days in a luxury resort, soaking up the tranquility instead of rushing out to explore the region. There’s always time for exploration later, but sometimes, self-care is the ultimate adventure.

  1. Embrace the Sensory Feast:

Travel isn’t just about what you see, it’s about what you smell, taste, hear, and feel. Savor the aroma of spices in a bustling market, the warmth of the sun on your skin, or the melody of a street performer.

  1. Zen it out:

Take a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness and express gratitude for your travel experiences. Travel isn’t just about exploring new places; it’s also a journey of self-discovery.

Remember, travel is not just about the destination; it’s about the transformation that unfolds within you. With these practices, you can unlock the magic of mindful travel, turning every journey into an adventure of the soul.
